Art grew up in Stanley, New York and attended Geneva High graduating in 1931. He played lacrosse and basketball, but baseball was his favorite sport. He talked the school into starting baseball his junior year after it had been dropped years before. He was the captain and star of the team his junior and senior years. Known for his strong throwing arm, Art was a third baseman and a pitcher. Art was undoubtedly the best third baseman in the area at the time. He was given a try-out with the St. Louis Cardinals’ AA team in Elmira. He played on many local semi-pro teams with this brothers George and Joe. All of them were outstanding baseball players. Art led the Empire State League in batting with a .340 average and played baseball until he was almost 50 years old.
