John graduated from DeSales High in 1976 and was a unanimous Finger Lakes West first team all-star his junior and senior years. He led the league in scoring both years with 17.4 and 24 points per game. He was an All-Greater Rochester Honorable Mention selection his senior year leading his team to the league championship and the sectional semi-finals where they lost to Roosevelt Bouie’s Kendall team, the #1 rank team in the state. John was also a first team all-star in baseball his junior and senior years. He batted .300 on the 1974 team which was the first parochial team to win a sectional title in Section V in any sport.

John played basketball at St. Lawrence and helped lead the team to three consecutive ICAC titles and two NCAA tournament appearances. John was captain of the 1979-80 team which was ranked #1 in the state and #6 in the nation while advancing to the NCAA Division III East Regional finals. John was the recipient of the Coach’s Award that year for his exceptional leadership and basketball skills. John, a guidance counselor at Fairport High School, was inducted into the Section V Basketball Hall of Fame in 2014.
