A 1947 graduate of Geneva High School, Ed played third base on the championship Geneva High baseball team as well as the state champion Kiwanis team. Ed was also first team all-league selection in football and basketball. Upon graduation from high school, Ed received a football scholarship to Syracuse University where he also played basketball.
Ed signed a professional contract with the Cincinnati Reds. In the spring of 1949 he was assigned to the Muncie Reds in the Ohio-Indiana League where he batted .278 and was a unanimous all-star at third base. In 1950, he was promoted to the Ogden Reds of the Pioneer League batting .293 and again was named to the all-league team. In 1951, Ed was promoted to the South Atlantic League playing for the Columbia Reds batting .286. After graduating from Syracuse University in 1952, Ed enlisted in the U.S. Marines playing third base for Quantico and the Third Marine Division in Japan and leading both to All-Service Championships.
