A stand out three-sport athlete, Dan made his biggest mark as a three-year starter on the varsity baseball team as a pitcher and shortstop. He co-captained the Panthers his senior year and was named a 1st Team Finger Lakes East All Star. He was also awarded the prestigious Deledonne Award that year. He was a three-time Finger Lakes East All-Star in soccer and led the league in scoring his junior and senior years. In 1989 Dan was named all-league in basketball and was named to the Section V all-tournament team as Geneva High captured the Class B sectional title. He graduated from Geneva in 1989.

He went on to Long Island University on a full baseball scholarship where he played for four years and was a starting pitcher his last three. In 1993 the St. Louis Cardinals drafted Dan in the 31st round. He started in the minor leagues in 1993 with Glen Falls of the NY-P League and progressed to Triple-A level Norfolk of the International League in 1999.
