A 1974 graduate of Geneva High School, Jay was an All-Finger Lakes East First Team all-Star his senior year averaging 16 ppg. He was team captain and team MVP. Jay went on to Cayuga Community College where he was a two year starter and tea captain and MVP his sophomore year. Jay averaged in double figures in scoring and helped Cayuga advance to regional play both years.
After graduating from Ithaca College in 1981, Jay entered the coaching profession serving as assistant varsity basketball coach at Ithaca He was named head men’s basketball coach at Clarkson University in 1983 and coached there until 1994. While at Clarkson he was twice named Empire Athletic conference Coach of the Year. In 1995 he was named head men’s basketball Coach at Alfred University In 1997 he led Alfred to the President’s Athletic Conference Title and their first NCAA Tournament appearance in eight years. In 1999 Alfred reached the finals of the ECAC Upstate NY Tournament. Jay was appointed Alfred University’s head women’s basketball coach in May, 2008 after serving for 13 seasons as the men’s head coach at AU.
