Gail “Darby” Lowery

“Darby” has been called ”one of the best natural athletes that ever attended Geneva High.” He played all sports with a natural grace, ease and competence…he always seemed to be thoroughly enjoying the game. “Darby” showed his ability early on, but became a local sports hero in basketball, football and baseball at G.H.S. He was captain & quarterback on the football team; captain & shortstop on the baseball team; 2-yr. captain and top scorer on the basketball team. The basketball team was Section V champions in 1934 & 1935, and “Darby” was chosen on the All-Sectional teams both years as well as winning the individual foul-shooting contest each of those years.

He also could handle a lacrosse stick with the best of the Geneva All-Americans of his day. After high school “Darby” played pro baseball for the St. Louis Cardinal’s minor league teams for a while. Later he played semi-pro baseball and basketball with local N.Y. State league teams.
