Norm began his career a the then Geneva Daily Times in 1955 and left after 36 years as one of the most respected small-paper sports people in the business. When he started, the newspaper only covered Geneva and DeSales high schools and Hobart and William Smith colleges. By the time he retired in 1991 he had expanded sports coverage to cover 27 school districts, and three colleges in the four county area.
Norm, a Rhode Island native first came to the area in 1945 when he was stationed at Sampson Naval Base. After graduating from the University of Rhode Island and the University of Missouri he began his writing career in Harrisburg, Ill. where he spent three years as a sports editor of the Evening Telegraph. Norm started working at the Times on December 1, 1955 and transformed the sports section of the newspaper. Norm was known for his Press Box Banter column and his Fearless Fred predictions during football season. He passed away in 2000 but his legacy will always live on in the sports pages of the Finger Lakes Times.
