Tenacious on defense and a deadly shooter on offense, Steve averaged in double figures all three years that he played on the DeSales varsity basketball team. He was an all-league 1st-team selection and the second leading scorer in the league with 17 pints per game his senior year. He was second team all-league his junior year.
After graduating from DeSales in 1967, Steve attended Auburn Community College where he helped lead them to a 17-4 record and a conference championship. He averaged 21 points per game and was an All-Western NY 1st team selection. Steve transferred to St. John Fisher where he served as team captain his junior and senior years while helping pace them to a 36-5 overall record while leading the team in assists both years. In his junior year, he set the Fisher single-game scoring record with 33 points and ranked 11th nationally in free throw shooting, as the Cardinals posted a College-record 19-2 mark. As a senior, Steve averaged 13 points and paced the Cardinals to a 17-3 record Steve was inducted into the St. John Fisher Hall of Fame in 2008.
