Ermen began to bowl in 1930 at the age of 19 at a two-lane alley in Geneva called Hessney's Hall. Erm had a 188 average that year and went on to become one of the premier bowlers in the state for over fifty years. One of the major highlights of Erm's bowling career was his FLBA record high triple of 786 rolled in 1939-40. In 1941, he bowled in his first American Bowling Congress Tournament and continued to bowl in it for 39 more consecutive years. He was awarded a 40-year plaque by the American Bowling Congress.

His best year was in 1941 when he placed 18th in the ABC tournament (all-events) and 22nd in the singles. In his long career, Erm bowled one 300 game and over fifty 700 or better triples. In 1986, Ermen was inducted into the Finger Lakes Bowling Association's Hall of Fame. He was also an outstanding left-fielder for the championship American Can Co. fast-pitch softball team.
