A 1949 graduate of Geneva High School Herb pitched in two sectional finals for the Panthers and helped them lead to a two league championships. His overall record was 16-2 witch included four no hitters. During his senior year, he had and ERA of 0.3 while fanning 86 batters. While in Geneva High he earned letters in basketball, cross country, and track. His senior year the basketball team won the AA Championship and reached the Sections Five finals.
He went on to pitch for five years in the minor leagues. In his first year of professional baseball, Herb posted a 17-7 record in the Gladewater East Texas League. His career continued with stops in The Big State, the West Texas, New Mexico, and the East Texas Leagues. He also pitched for Geneva Red Birds. In 1955 his promising career ended when he broke his pitching arm playing basketball in his off season. On October 4, 1982 Herb retired From the Geneva Police Department after 25 years of service.
