John was 1st Team All-State, 1st Team All-Greater Rochester and 1st Team All-League in football his senior year as a defensive tackle at Geneva High. He was also the Section V wrestling champion as a senior setting a school record with 26 wins and 20 pins. He competed in the state tournament and finished 4th in the state. He rounded out a stellar senior year by winning a sectional title in track and field in the discus and qualifying for the state meet in the discus and shot put. John was ranked in the top ten in the state in both events. He graduated in 1980.

After high school John was a starter at defensive tackle at Hudson Valley Community College and then Eastern Michigan University where he received a football scholarship.
