John F. "Wannie" Carroll
Golf
Inducted Class of 1991
Wannie Carroll was undoubtedly the best golfer in the Geneva area in the 1930’s and ‘40’s. He started playing golf at age 12 in 1920 when he was a caddy at the Seneca Lake Country Club. He joined the S.L.C.C. in 1929 and has won the Seneca Lake C.C. Championship 15 times and the City of Geneva Championship 4 times. He scored below his age many times and once scored a “double eagle” (3 under par) on a par five 560 yard hole. In addition to local tournaments, he has won many Finger Lakes tournaments in his time and is a past President of the Finger Lakes Golf Association. Wannie loved the game, and played golf in Ireland, Scotland, Mexico, Canada and Jamaica. He worked most of his life with Patent Cereals Co. and retired as Vice President of Lauhoff Grain Co. of Danville, Illinois. However, Wannie was most proud of his two sons, who are equally great golfers. John passed away in 2018
