An all-star guard, Don was a three-year letter winner in football serving as co-caption his senior year. Don also lettered in basketball, track, and baseball. A well-rounded student, Don was in the Leaders Club, the Glee Club, and Chorus, as well as serving in student government.
Upon graduation from Geneva High in 1951 he went on to Hobart College where he was a four-year starter on the football team at tackle and guard. He was remembered for his lightning bolt charge and his hard play along the line. Don climaxed his career at Hobart by being named Little All-American his senior year and helped lead Hobart to its first undefeated and untied season. He also played on the lacrosse team.
In 1955 upon graduation, Don was commissioned 2nd Lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force serving as a jet fighter and instructor pilot logging over 2000 hours as a senior pilot. His decorations include the bronze Star Medal and the Meritorious Service Medal with two oak leaf clusters. He retired in the rank of Lieutenant Colonel in 1982.
