Asa grew up and starred in all sports in Elmira, New York. He settled in Geneva as a businessman in 1937 and became very active in the sports scene for over 40 years. In 1946, he initiated and developed the original charter establishing Kiwanis baseball in Geneva. In 1947, Asa coached the Kiwanis Senior team to a New York State Championship beating Astoria 6-4 at Ebbets Field before 35,000 fans. In 1948, he founded the City Basketball League and started the Kiwanis Relays which still exists today. In 1949, he helped bring a minor league baseball team, the Geneva Red Birds, to Geneva and was its first Chairman of the Board of Directors. In 1960, he secured the Hornell Dodger franchise and hooked up with Cincinnati in the NYP League.
Asa served as a Geneva city councilman for 12 years. He received the Kiwanis International Award for Leadership in Boys Baseball in 1949 and was cited for Outstanding Public Service by the Geneva City Council in 1984.
