A life long advocate for equity for women in sports, Maxine’s love for sports was evident at Geneva High where she played field hockey, softball, track, basketball, and tennis. The 1954 graduate averaged 23 points per game on the basketball team and was awarded the first medal given at the Junior Olympics in the 50-yard dash in 1949. Encouraged by the late Joe Jenkins, Maxine earned a basketball officials rating in high school. As a college referee, she had the opportunity to testify for a basketball coach involved in a class action suit for gender equity in sports prior to Title IX. At Russell Sage College she earned status in the Athletic Honorary Sage Circle by participating in field hockey, basketball, and tennis. She was name all-conference in field hockey.

Maxine’s career in education included classroom teacher, guidance counselor, principal, and director of special education. She served as the Executive Director of the NYS Assoc. for Women in Administration where she designed and published a nationally funded program entitled “Women helping Girls with Choice”. The organization presents an annual award in her name for her efforts in promoting gender equity for young women in New York State.
