Chip was the 1982 NYSPHSAA Indoor State Champion in the pole vault with a vault of 13'7". In 1981 he was 5th in the Outdoor State Championships and was the Section V Champion. He captained the 1982 Geneva High School team which captured both league and Section V championship honors. In '82, Chip placed second in the Empire State Games and was also a Section V Champion in the 1600 and 3200 relays. At Spokane Community College, Chip won the pole vault in the State of Washington division of the NAA of Community Colleges with a 17" effort. In 1984, Chip was the bronze medalist in the Washington/Oregon competition of the NAACC.

As a coach, Chip was assistant coach for field events at the University of Rochester. In '92 the U of R won the NCAA indoor championship and also was team champion in the outdoor event. With Chip coaching the Newark HS pole vaulters, shot putters, and discus. Newark won the Boys' Class B State team championship in 1996 and the Girls' State championship in 1997. Seven different athletes coached by Chip won state individual titles.
