John grew up in Geneva and graduated from Geneva High. He started playing baseball in the little league where he hit three consecutive homeruns on opening night, June 11, 1952. This was the first year of Little League in Geneva and John helped lead his team, the Giants to the league pennant and the Geneva Little League All-Star team to the District 2 Championship. John was a sensation in high school where he played varsity baseball for four years. He helped lead Geneva High to sectional titles in baseball in 1956 and 1957. He also helped lead GHS to a second place finish in 1955.

John went on to Hobart College where he starred on their baseball team and graduated in 1961. He then became a teacher at Canandaigua Academy where he was the varsity baseball coach and assistant football coach. In 1968 John joined the Educational Division of the Singer Co. where he devoted his efforts to the field of education and training of disadvantaged youths. John served as area baseball scout for the LA Dodgers at age 21 and was the youngest person ever on a signed contract to scout professionally.
