Peter lost only once in 60 bouts during his three-year varsity wrestling career at Geneva High. He went undefeated his junior and senior years while capturing two Section V Class A titles. Peter was the 103 lb sectional champ as a junior and the 112 lb class champion as a senior. He was also a three-time Finger Lakes League Champion. He served as co-captain of the wrestling team his junior and senior year. Peter also lettered in lacrosse as a midfielder. Peter graduated in 1966.

Peter went on to Colgate University where he wrestled for four years and served as team captain his junior and senior years. He joined the Air Force after graduation and was a member of the Air Force wrestling team placing second in the Inter-service Freestyle Tournament in 1972 and 1973. He retired from the Air Force in 1991.
