70 - 71 Geneva High School Wrestling Team

1970-71 Geneva High School Wrestling Team

The team finished with an undefeated season of 11-0-1, tying only Elmira Free Academy, who was ranked in the top ten of New York State teams. They then went on to win the Finger Lakes League Championship followed by winning the Section V Class A League Championship. There were three wrestlers on that team who went on to win the Class A vs. Class B Championship, which advanced them to the New York State Tournament. They were 98-pound Jim Welsh, 105 John Szkolnik and 112 Bill Welsh.

The Following was written in the “Geneva Times” dated April 10, 1971 after the team banquet with the headline “All Outstanding”: Bill Brooks, reflecting on the highly successful 11-0-1 season that included and 8-0 W-FL League record, the W-FL tournament title and then, topped off by the Section V Crown said, “I’d take this team and put it against any team or combination of teams and not worry. These guys wouldn’t allow themselves to be beaten. We were tough mentally and tough physically. Outside our league we wrestled the best we could find and we whipped them. There wasn’t any question about it, it wasn’t a fluke.” The Section V trophy is the “most prized possession because this is a large section with plenty of good teams. It’s always been in the city or county (Rochester and Monroe) but we went up there and won it. It’s a first for us.”
