Robert Maher

Robert Maher
Coach
DeSales H.S. Class of 1952

Bob Maher served as a teacher and Athletic Director at DeSales High School from 1958-1967, coaching baseball, basketball, and football over that same span. His teams compiled over 120 total wins and numerous accolades while he was at the helm. Coach Maher's Saints competed not only with cross-town rival, Geneva High School, but also with Canandaigua and other larger schools during this era. No matter the size, Coach Maher 's athletes were ready to compete and were known for their scrappy, tenacious attitude.

It was under the guidance of Coach Maher that former DeSales baseball stars Steve Reid and Paul DeVaney honed the skills that would eventually help to land them professional contracts. He also coached the DeSales baseball program to their first ever league title in 1960, finishing with a 13-1 record. Despite multiple Coach of the Year Awards and accolades heaped upon his teams and his players, perhaps Coach Maher's biggest accomplishment stands the simple fact that he was the face of DeSales High School athletics for a decade and a role model to countless DeSales High School athletes.
